A Reconstitution Solution is a liquid used to dissolve or dilute a powdered medication or vaccine before administration. Many medications and vaccines are stored in a dry (lyophilized) form to extend their shelf life and require reconstitution before use.

Common Uses of Reconstitution Solutions:

  1. Medications: Some antibiotics, biologics, and hormone therapies come in powder form and must be mixed with a sterile liquid before injection.
  2. Vaccines: Certain vaccines require reconstitution before administration.
  3. Laboratory Applications: Used to prepare reagents or solutions for medical testing and research.

Types of Reconstitution Solutions:

  • Sterile Water for Injection (SWFI) – Used for most injections.
  • Normal Saline (0.9% Sodium Chloride) – Often used for IV or intramuscular (IM) injections.
  • Dextrose Solution (5% or 10%) – Used in specific medical applications.
  • Bacteriostatic Water – Contains a preservative and is used for multi-dose vials.

How Reconstitution Works:

  1. The appropriate amount of reconstitution solution is drawn into a syringe.
  2. The liquid is injected into the vial containing the powdered medication or vaccine.
  3. The vial is gently swirled (not shaken) to dissolve the powder completely.
  4. The reconstituted solution is then drawn up and administered as prescribed.
